Frequently Asked Questions

Is an account required? No. Gym has no sign-in of any kind. There is no login, password, or registration — everything runs on your device.

Where is my data stored? All of your routines, logged workouts, and custom exercises are stored locally on your iPhone. Nothing is sent to any server.

Does Gym connect to Apple Health? Only if you turn it on, and only to read — Gym never writes to Apple Health. Connecting is optional (you’re asked during onboarding, and can change it any time in the app menu). When enabled, Gym reads the workouts around your lifting session — warm-up and finisher cardio, active energy, and heart rate — to enrich your session review with calories and heart-rate zones. This data is processed on your device and is never uploaded. If you leave it off, Gym works fully using only what you enter.

What are the heart-rate zones and inter-set recovery? When Apple Health is connected, Gym reads your heart rate during a session and shows how long you spent in each effort zone, plus how well your heart rate recovered between sets. Zones are estimated from your age and resting heart rate — general fitness information, not medical monitoring.

How do the routine cycles work? You build a routine as an ordered cycle of workout days and rest days. Gym advances to the next day each time you finish (or skip) a session — it’s completion-based, not calendar-based, so missing a day just resumes where you left off. When you start a session, Gym can also suggest which day is due based on how recently each muscle group was trained.

Does Gym have a rest timer? Yes. A rest timer starts automatically when you complete a set. You can set your target rest time in the app menu (default 90 seconds). On a supported iPhone the countdown also appears as a Live Activity on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, and you get a buzz when rest is up — so you can put the phone down between sets.

How is training volume calculated? Volume is the total weight moved on completed sets (weight × reps). Each exercise’s volume is also attributed to the muscles it trains — primary muscles at full weight and secondary muscles at half — to power the muscle-balance and trend views. Large totals are shown abbreviated (for example, “12.5k lb”).

What do “Progressing”, “Steady”, “Stalled”, and “Regressing” mean? Gym estimates your one-rep max from your logged sets and tracks each lift over time. It recognizes progress in more than one way — heavier weight, more reps or total work at the same weight, the same work with less rest, or the same load at a lower perceived effort (RPE) — so genuine improvement isn’t missed just because the top weight held. The “stalled” window adapts to each lift’s own history, so a lift that normally improves slowly isn’t flagged too early. These are on-device statistics, not medical or professional coaching advice.

Why does an exercise show as stalled after I lowered the weight to fix my form? Because an older, heavier set can keep setting the bar even if the form was poor. Open that exercise from the Trends or History view, press and hold the first session where your form was correct, and choose Start fresh from this session. Gym then judges that lift’s trend from that point forward. Your full history stays intact — only the trend re-baselines. You can reset it any time.

Can I bring in workouts from another app or a spreadsheet? Yes. Open the app menu → Backup & Data → Import from CSV. Gym reads exports from apps like Strong, Hevy, and FitNotes, as well as your own spreadsheet, and adds those workouts to your history (your existing data is kept). Before importing, you can review each exercise and correct how its name maps to Gym’s library.

Can Gym review how I did today? Yes. After a session Gym gives you a plain-language review of the day. On iPhones that support Apple Intelligence this can be generated on-device, and you can also copy a summary to paste into your own AI assistant. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to share it.

Can I fix a workout I logged wrong? Yes. Open the workout in History and tap Edit. You can change the date, adjust or delete individual sets, add sets, add or remove exercises, and reassign a set to the correct exercise (for example if you picked the wrong machine variant). You can also swap an exercise mid-session. Progress, trends, and muscle stats update automatically.

Does Gym need the internet? No. All calculations run entirely on-device. Gym has no backend and transmits no data.

Can I move my data to a new iPhone? Yes. Open the app menu → Backup & Data → Export to save a JSON file, then Import it on your new phone. Your subscription itself is tied to your Apple ID and restores automatically. You can also use Import from CSV to bring in history from other apps.

Subscription

How much does Gym cost? Gym is offered as an auto-renewing subscription with a free trial. The current price and trial length are shown in the app and in the App Store before you subscribe.

How do I manage or cancel my subscription? Subscriptions are handled by Apple. Manage or cancel any time in Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or at https://apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.

I already subscribed — how do I restore it on a new device? Open Gym and use Restore Purchases on the subscription screen. Your subscription is tied to the Apple ID you purchased with.

What happens if my subscription lapses? Access to the app’s features pauses until you resubscribe. Your data stays safely on your device and is available again as soon as you renew.
