Frequently Asked Questions

Does BikeStats need an account? No. There is no sign-in, login, or registration of any kind. BikeStats reads data that already exists in Apple Health on your device.

Why isn’t BikeStats showing my rides? BikeStats reads cycling workouts from Apple Health. Make sure you have granted Health access:

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app
  2. Go to Privacy & Security → Health → BikeStats
  3. Enable Cycling Distance, Heart Rate, Active Energy, and Workouts

If you use an Apple Watch, your rides are automatically synced to Health. If you use a third-party app (Strava, Wahoo, Garmin, Zwift, etc.), check whether that app writes workouts to Apple Health.

Why does BikeStats only show cycling — not running or other sports? BikeStats is dedicated to cycling. It reads workouts recorded as “Outdoor Cycle” or “Indoor Cycle” from Apple Health. Other activity types are not included.

What is the difference between Outdoor and Indoor tabs? The Outdoor tab shows rides recorded with GPS or a speed sensor (where actual distance is available). The Indoor tab shows stationary or trainer rides — typically logged from Apple Watch’s Indoor Cycle workout or apps like Zwift. On Apple Watch, selecting “Indoor Cycle” at workout start flags the session as indoor.

What is indoor distance estimation? Many indoor bike sessions don’t record distance — your stationary bike has no GPS and the app may not track wheel rotations. BikeStats estimates the distance for these sessions using your average outdoor cycling speed for that year (or the nearest year if you have no outdoor rides that year). Estimated distances are marked with a ~ symbol throughout the app.

My indoor rides are showing a very high or low estimated distance. Why? Indoor distance estimates are based on your outdoor average speed, which may not match how hard you ride indoors. For example, a Peloton ride at high resistance is more effort than a casual outdoor cruise at the same speed. The estimate is a rough approximation — useful for totals and trends, but not suitable for precise comparisons.

Why doesn’t BikeStats show cadence or power for older rides? Cadence and power data require iOS 17 and a compatible sensor (cadence sensor, power meter, or smart trainer) that writes data to Apple Health. Rides recorded before these sensors were available, or from devices that don’t record these metrics, will show no cadence or power.

How far back does BikeStats go? BikeStats loads all cycling workouts stored in Apple Health — there is no date limit. If you have rides from several years ago, they will all appear in the All time filter and in the year-over-year comparison.

Does BikeStats work without internet? Yes. All calculations run entirely on your device. BikeStats has no internet connection and does not transmit any data.

Where is my data stored? BikeStats does not store any data of its own. It reads directly from Apple Health each time you open the app. Your Health data is stored and managed by Apple on your device.

Does BikeStats write anything to Apple Health? No. BikeStats is read-only. It never modifies or writes to Apple Health.

I purchased BikeStats — how do I use it on another device? BikeStats is a standard paid app purchase tied to your Apple ID. It is available on all devices signed in with the same Apple ID, including through Family Sharing (subject to your Apple ID sharing settings). Simply download it from the App Store — there are no extra steps.
